The spiritual beliefs surrounding gold as well as it’s impact on societal wealth, influenced fashion in the Asante Empire. Wearable and ornamental gold became symbolic of social status, good-fortune and creativity. So symbolic had gold become, that it was used to gild the bodies of dignitaries before burial. Asante goldsmiths were commissioned by members of high society, to create masterful designs featuring talismanic properties.
